Abstract :
A new block matching algorithm is examined for motion compensated coding of videophone signals. In this algorithm, firstly, a motion vector field is obtained by using small size of blocks. Secondly, the motion vector filed is postprocessed and appropriate block dimensions are chosen for each region. Estimated displacement vectors are used to direct the motion compensated interframe predictor. Finally, the DCT of the motion compensated difference signal between current and previous frames, displacement vectors and block size information are coded. Simulation results of this algorithm shows less image degradation compared to the fixed size block matching algorithm for typical videophone images at the bit rate of 64 kbits/s
