Abstract :
Twelve pulse nonlinear loads are generally employed in high power applications for large AC and DC drives. These 12-pulse rectifiers are utilized for high power loads because of comparatively less supply current Total Harmonic Distortion (THD) compared to 6-pulse rectifier at front end. However, both 6-pulse as well as 12-pulse converters at front end behaving as nonlinear loads do not meet IEEE 519 harmonic standard without additional filtering. This paper deals with the application of a DSTATCOM for compensation of such loads. The MATLAB / Simulink based models are developed for 6-pulse, 12- pulse diode rectifier loads. The analysis is carried out with and without DSTATCOM. It is observed that DSTATCOM is a very effective solution for filtering of harmonics and can totally eliminate the requirement of passive filters used frequently for harmonic elimination.
