Abstract :
This paper introduces an optimal control of reactive power for a composite system by using a switchable shunt capacitor at the load site and determines the relevant capacitor size based mainly on the recorded magnitude and angle of load voltage. The algorithm for capacitor calculation is integrated into a software package which is fed by an instant supply and load voltage values, estimated kW demand and constraints imposed on the whole system. In accordance, the algorithm outputs the exact capacitance size, its current and the expected gain of active power as a result of limiting the reactive power generated by the supply. The optimisation of the whole process is reached by getting minimum value of the net added cost paid for compensating the load kVAr
