Abstract :
Interactive animated computer graphics provides a versatile, and powerful facility in many developing computer applications. CAD systems, flight simulators, and virtual reality games are among the more common examples of its application. The implementation of a high-speed SIMD “graphics engine” is presented which has grown out of earlier designs of a pyramid tree-structured processor, which produces the depth values of surfaces at an array of pixels simultaneously, and a set of pipelined-pixel-processors which process these depth values in parallel to create a display. The novelty of the work is the way CSG scene models are used to simplify the hidden area removal and object interference testing; the extension of the CSG scheme to include surfaces, and the use of FPGA technology to implement the scheme
