Abstract
Solid waste abatement is attracting wide attention, with its generation increasing rapidly in China. In this paper, we calculate the solid waste rational abatement ratio (SRAR) of 30 regions in China from 1995 to 2006, by applying data envelopment analysis based on the regional own production frontier. Results show that, the more developed area is, the lower SRAR is. The eastern, central and western areas have the lowest, medium and highest 1995-2006 average SRAR (11.49%, 35.62% and 53.15%), respectively. Chinese government should emphasize particularly on solid waste abatement in central and western area. More investment in solid waste management and introducing advanced technology are the urgent tasks for central and western area to improve solid waste efficiency.
