Abstract :
Protecting electric devices from lightning overvoltages by using surge protective devices (SPDs) is necessary because electronic apparatuses operate at lower withstand voltages. It is very important to consider “overvoltage protection” and “energy cooperation” when using SPDs for protecting an apparatus. The “response characteristics” are important when considering “overvoltage protection” of SPDs. Both the wavefront length and the peak values of the overvoltage waveform are important for defining the timing of SPD operation. In this study, the response characteristics of typical SPDs used for lightning protection of an electronic apparatus were examined.
