Abstract :
The radiation mechanism of a dielectric rod antenna can be explained by the so-called discontinuity-radiation concept (DRC). We demonstrate the DRC for a dielectric rod antenna using the FDTD method. For this, the total field along the rod is decomposed into a space wave (SPW) generated at the feed end and a surface wave (SUW) propagating along the rod. The SW is evaluated by the imaginary-distance beam-propagation method based on Yee´s mesh (YM-BPM). Furthermore, a terminal radiation pattern (TP) generated from the free end and a feed radiation pattern (FP) generated from the feed end are calculated using the SUW and SPW, respectively. It is numerically revealed that the radiation pattern of a dielectric rod antenna is formed by the superposition of the TP and FP.
