Abstract
This paper presents an optimization mechanism for the Gnutella network that better meets the mobility requirement of collaborative virtual environments (CVEs). The proposed mechanism comprises: the restructuring of the Gnutella network through an efficient overlay formation for mobile nodes that are participating in a CVE; and a PONG caching optimization technique implemented in selected nodes through the Gnutella Ultrapeer System (GUS). The resulting approach keeps the Gnutella unstructured network characteristic, but minimizes its broadcast nature in order to meet acceptable delay and latency for CVEs. In addition, a session manager concept is implemented to both control user activities in the Virtual Environment (VE) and allow users to participate in multiple sessions.
