Abstract :
At present, so-called electronic flight bags can present an ownship-referenced electronic map of the airport. Several experimental surface navigation and guidance displays also include a depiction of the commanded route. Depending on the type of display, the information obtained from the data can be used to increase route awareness, obtain directional information or even steer the aircraft along a graphically depicted route. The allowed use of the routing data depends on the quality of the data. The possibilities to present directional data and reference data for manual control depend on the structure and quality of the available data. The experiment discussed in this paper investigated two different concepts for the presentation of routing data in a guidance display and two different versions of a memory support aid. In one concept, the directional instructions were provided separately from a graphical guidance and control reference. In the other concept, the two information items were integrated into a single graphical object.
