Abstract
The main user benefit of ISDN in the first echelon is cost saving. Based on the functionality and tariffs of ISDN in Germany, the typical saving is 30-50% in combined voice/data applications. For PABX and data transmission (computer networks) 10-80% can be saved. This however presupposes exiguous investment in terminals. A good solution is a cheap universal ISDN adaption card for a personal computer (PC). The PC thereby becomes the most versatile terminal in ISDN. ISDN as a universal standardized access method for all types of networks will lead to new applications. This will be the main benefit of ISDN in subsequent stages
