Abstract :
An architecture model is proposed for a fiber-based subscriber loop network optimized at the minimum cost for the implementation technology and passive components inserted between the distribution center and the subscriber premises. The optimization has been carried out on the basis of technical and economical considerations and a prediction of the cost reduction trend up to the year 1995 has been derived for both the various passive components and the overall implementation costs. An economic evaluation of the overall network implementation cost per subscriber has been carried out on the basis of the different solutions and technologies described. This evaluation has been performed at present costs. Cost reduction trends up to the year 1995 have been derived by assuming mass production volumes, optimized manufacturing processes, and the adoption of upgraded installation procedures. On the basis of these considerations the most economical solution has been identified
