Abstract :
The paper describes the workings of the "Eye in the Sky" project and, in particular, the aspects concerning vehicular technology and intelligent transport infrastructure services. The developed system provides for traffic monitoring, dynamic fleet management and customized mobility information. Floating car data (FCD) are collected and transmitted via terrestrial mobile communication networks to an operational centre. State-of-the-art algorithms are applied and traffic flow is calculated for the road network. In parallel, high-resolution digital imagery, collected from a camera on-board a helicopter, complements the traffic data. Fusion of FCD and data optical provides traffic information of superior quality. The aims, the methodology, and the system structure are presented, along with the provided services and a short description of the results and the innovations achieved in the framework of the project.
