Abstract :
The authors review the reasons for sensor performance assessment, strategies being used and the current state of application at the various stages of validation. Sensor performance is often an essential activity for reasons of its legal requirement to perform and for improved management of resources. Assessment is needed at all stages of the sensor´s life cycle: first when being selected for a given application, next when commissioned, and then also during operation. Performance prediction during design and selection, validation at commissioning time, online validation, online calibration, and automatic fault diagnosis are considered
