Abstract
The authors introduce a viable design for a complete portable electronic peak flowmeter system that can fulfill all requirements for clinical self-management purposes of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) patients, such as for asthma and cara patients. The system requirements are described and it has been revealed that the sensor is the most critical component. A thermal silicon anemometer was investigated. It was shown that this sensor is a viable option for this application. In particular, frequency response of up to 100-Hz bandwidth is a major requirement. Some other applications and future developments are indicated
