Abstract
With mobile devices now an integral part of both our personal and business lives, we are routinely carrying around valuable assets that need protection. This applies to both the devices and, more significantly, the data they commonly hold and the further access they can facilitate. This heightens the need for long-standing safeguards such as authentication, alongside the need for controls such as malware protection that have not traditionally been required outside the realm of desktop and laptop systems. In addition, for organisations, the mobile dimension also brings significant technical and policy considerations in terms of whether staff bring, choose, or are assigned a device. With these points in mind, Steven Furnell examines the mobile security landscape, considering the safeguards and ongoing challenges that need to be recognised.
