Title :

Abstract :
This paper is about a `self-learning package´ and its effectiveness in the teaching of an analytical course. The package consists of a video and a set of hand-outs with `gaps´ which the students fill during the pauses in the video. It was used in a normal lecture slot for year 2 mechanical engineering undergraduates at Canterbury. The students have responded positively. The author believes that since the higher educational institutes (worldwide) are coming under increasing pressure to improve the quality and quantity of teaching without appropriate increase in funding, self-learning packages may become attractive. This is an area in which the multimedia technology has some potential applications
