Abstract :
Abstract only given, as follows. The successful and fast application of dense wavelength division multiplexing (DWDM) and Er doped fiber amplifiers (EDFAs) worldwide has revolutionized the development and deployment of telecommunications infrastructure networks by service providers positioned for global competition in the new millenium. The old paradigm in building up a transport facility network to support ever-increasing aggregates of switched voice traffic from customer´s sites via local access central offices to remote destinations across the highest capacity big pipes of long distance carriers is now passe, since it can no longer support the explosive demands and dynamic traffic pattern changes driven by both Internet and wireless communications growth. In spite of the variations in regulatory and business environment for different global regions, there exists a common demand for a high capacity low cost solution that can be satisfied by a DWDM-based fiber optic transport. In this paper, the evolution of optical networking technologies and the issue of transparency are discussed within the context of their potential impact upon further stimulating the on-going paradigm shift and structural change in the telecommunication network infrastructure development for emerging wireless and broadband services
