Abstract :
The authors highlight the exercises carried out by CPRI to improve the quality of paraffinic transformer oils beyond that of those available commercially in India. This was achieved by a proper choice of feedstock and process treatment involving hydrofining, acid treatment, etc. Field data on these oils used in a transformer having a rating of 220 kV and monitored over five years are presented. Besides highlighting some of the accelerated test data on these oils in the laboratory, coverage is given to the use of antioxidants, gassing tendency, and mixing of oils
