Abstract
Open problems in document image analysis research and development relevant to digital libraries (DLs) are briefly described and their difficulty and urgency estimated. They are grouped according to the stage of processing, in the construction of DLs, where they first apply: image capture, early processing, content extraction and recognition, structure analysis, retrieval, & presentation; and in personal and interactive DLs.
