Abstract :
The state estimator is the critical tool that National Grid in New England relies on to assess in real time the current state of the transmission system for itself and for its neighboring utilities. This paper will describe the operational history of state estimation at National Grid and the reasons for its successful implementation. It will focus on the present tool set, the delivered functionality, vendor supplied improvements and National Grid engineered solutions that improve situational/system awareness for the operator with respect to both the state of the transmission system as well as the quality of the SE solution.
