Abstract
The paper presents novel algorithms for computing the presence of critical unstable limit cycles in large-scale nonlinear systems. The algorithms are illustrated in realistic large-scale models of the western American electric power system. The algorithms provide insight into the interaction of stable and unstable limit cycles in influencing the evolution of an electric black-out experienced by the western American power system on August 10,1996
