Abstract
Colloidal nanocrystals of different materials can be functionalized with biomolecules allowing molecular recognition. In this process the surface of the colloids is covered with surfactants to control their growth. They can be interpreted as nanoscale building blocks which can be arranged on surfaces or combined to form hybrid materials with interesting physical and chemical properties.
