Abstract

The Hengill area in SW-Iceland is one of the most extensive geothermal areas in Iceland. Orkuveita Reykjavikur operates two power plants on the Hengill area. The company is working on a environmental impact assessment for two new power plant in the area. Power plants on the Hengill area will produce at least 600 MW_el and 433 MW_th by the end of 2011. The company is also working on research projects connected with itpsilas power plant project; the Carb-Fix project and IDDP project. This paper describes the Hengill area, Orkuveita Reykjavikurpsilas power plants and research projects in the Hengill area.
