Abstract
This paper describes the use of the American Gas Association AGA 12-2 Standard for the encryption of SCAD A communication messages. This encryption can be added as a wrapper layer to byte-oriented protocols such as DNP3 and Modbus and consequently can be applied to existing communication systems. AGA 12-2 complies with the upcoming IEEE 1689 and IEEE 1711 standards for securing SCADA communication. AGA 12-2 describes a SCADA cryptographic module (SCM) that can be applied as a "bump- in-the-wire" device placed in series with the communication interface for the SCM function can be performed internally within a SCADA device.
