Abstract :
Various nonlinear control techniques have been applied in power system control. The performance of nonlinear controllers is influenced by the parameter uncertainty and external disturbance. This paper will present a novel approach of robust variable structure control (VSC) based static synchronous compensator (STATCOM) controller design for damping multi-mode electrical-mechanic oscillations. The designed controllers can provide significant damping to both local mode and inter-area mode oscillations. Robust performance of the proposed controller in the SMIB and three-area power system is demonstrated by computer simulation.
