Abstract :
This paper introduces an innovation concept of "generalized yellow light dilemma zone" (GDZ), because that conventional concept of dilemma zone is not suitable for intersection collision avoidance system (ICAS) strategy. In contrast to the conventional dilemma zone defined at the onset time of yellow light, generalized yellow light dilemma zone involved the situation during yellow interval. After a brief review of conventional concept of dilemma zone, this article presents the kinematical expression of generalized yellow light dilemma zone. A traffic simulation platform is also developed with VISSIM to evaluate suitability of two concepts for ICAS strategy. Simulation result reveals that the GDZ is more applicable for ICAS because all the violation vehicles can be judged out by the concept of GDZ and some violators could be omitted by conventional concept, even if the influencing factors has being took into fully consideration. In the last part of the paper, ICAS strategy is discussed considering the concept of generalized yellow light dilemma zone.
