Abstract :
The protection device is the assurance for high temperature superconducting (HTS) cablepsilas safe operation in power grid. The paper introduces a protection device for HTS cable, which provides both functions of protection and monitoring. In this paper, hardware structure of the protection device and the protection scheme are presented, then a thermal balance model of HTS cable on quench is proposed, with which the over-current limit value and thermal accumulation limit value of HTS cable are determined. In order to study the characteristics of HTS cable system and accumulate commercial operation experience of HTS cable system, the device also offers operation-state record of HTS cable, including all the non-electric signals and electric signals. The data on operation shows that the protection device runs well.
