Abstract :
The paper discusses a practical approach to the simulation of statistical variations of the received signal strength in wireless indoor location systems based on personal area networks (PAN). Typically in such systems, we are interested in the received signal power variations and that can be described by the Gamma distribution with parameters k (shape) and 0 (scale). From the measurements or the simulations of the indoor location environment we can determine the propagation model for the average received power in dBm and the standard deviation of the power σdB in dB. The paper addresses the problem of finding parameters of the Gamma distribution which yield the required statistical variation of the received signal strength specified in dBm. Also, a comparison of the log-norm and Gamma distributions with other models and practical measurements is presented.
