Abstract :
Integration of large-scale wind power production into the grid made it necessary to formulate certain requirements each plant has to fulfill. The grid codes vary for each country depending on the amount of wind power installed and the robustness of the existing grid. As wind power is mostly available in remote parts far away from the load centers the grid stiffness at the point of interconnection (POI) plays a fundamental role for operating the wind turbine. This paper investigates the operation of a wind turbine connected to a weak grid and provides a control scheme for a wind turbine that allows dealing with weak grid situations and is in line with the German grid code regarding reactive power supply and low voltage ride through capability. All simulations were performed on the PSACD/EMTDC simulator.
