  • Abstract
The PJM Interconnection, one of the North American Regional Transmission Organizations (RTO), is responsible for the security coordination and reliable operation of a major part of the Eastern Interconnect, with a service area covering thirteen States and Washington DC, and over 165,000 MW of installed generating capacity. It is also responsible for the administration and operation of the associated wholesale electricity markets, including day-ahead, real-time energy, capacity and ancillary markets. This project involves solving a number of very challenging technical issues. In particular, it is based on a service oriented architecture (SOA), which will facilitate the integration of the various current and future software components, and maximize their re-usability, while supplying operators with a common user interface and providing a robust foundation for improved security. This paper will focus on the technical aspects and challenges associated with the development of the new architecture, and will highlight lessons learned.
