Abstract :
Extraordinary properties of coherent nonlinear-optical coupling of ordinary and backward electromagnetic waves in negative-index metamaterials are reviewed such as second harmonic generation, frequency-mixing and optical parametric amplification. Striking contrast with the properties of the counterparts in ordinary materials is shown. The possibilities for compensating strong losses inherent to plasmonic metamaterials, which present major obstacle for their numerous exciting applications, and possibilities for creation of unique ultracompact photonic devices such as data processing chips and sensor are proposed. Similar three-wave mixing processes in crystals based on optical phonons with negative dispersion are discussed.
