Abstract
This is a short review about potential use of optical communications and related technologies in smart- and MicroGrids. The application of Passive Optical Networks (PONs) as a telecommunication system for Smart Grids (SGs) and MGs was studied in details from the perspectives of basic architecture, main advantages, and protection schemes. The comparison of PONs with the conventional communication systems used in today´s smart grids (IEC 61850 and DNP3) is presented. The purpose of this study is to identify the emerging telecommunication technologies for their potential applications in Smart- and MicroGrids.
