Abstract :
EFIT-V is a relatively new facial composite system, which has recently been introduced into a large number of UK police forces. The police procedure of working with EFIT-V directly claims that a witness should not be left alone and that he/she should work with a help of a police officer. However, some individuals may benefit from having a person to guide them, while others may find the presence of a police officer irritating and stressful. The comparison of the two ways of working with EFIT-V was explored in a study in which 82 participants worked with a researcher or alone in order to construct a facial composite. Further 68 participants took part in identification procedures, where ratings of confidence and accuracy where taken. No significant differences in accuracy were found between composites created solely by a witness and with the help of an operator.
