Abstract
This paper analyses the influence of the MV network topology on the quality of supply and proposes possible solutions to improve the current performance of open ring networks. The following points are covered: the effectiveness of strategically positioned, remotely controlled sectionalising circuit breakers in improving security and availability in MV open ring networks; a possible migration path to MV closed ring networks with unit protection; and the switchgear, protection and control building blocks required to implement these network schemes
