Abstract :
Alkaline-earth halides can be made into bright scintillators if purity is maintained during synthesis and growth. In order to investigate precursor purity, europium iodide, cesium iodide, and barium iodide beads were heated under vacuum and assessed by residual gas spectroscopy. Water and CO2 desorption, as well as iodide dissociation, was observed in Eul2 and BaI2· CsI sublimed and only released argon. The data inform approaches toward purification and growth.
