"An FPGA-based Real-Time Digital Simulator for Power Electronics Systems"

Real-time simulation of complex electrical systems represents a challenge for several reasons. However, the main one is that electrical systems require small simulation time steps for accurate results. More problems arise when dealing with power converters like PWM motor drives or FACTS converters. The presence of sharp discontinuities given by the switching events pushes the simulation step down to sub-mus precision. In this paper, an FPGA-based real-time digital simulator is proposed to simulate transients in z power distribution system. A simple test system is used to verify the principle. The mathematical model for the power system under consideration is implemented in Xilinx ISE8.2 and ModelSim simulator. A description of a scalable hardware architecture for very complex systems is also introduced.
