Abstract :
In this paper, the challenges to increase the levels of renewable energy penetration levels of renewable energy are discussed. Wind power and solar thermal generation, are changing the generation mix in most grids around the world. The relative fast deployment of renewable energy in Europe and now in the USA provide challenges to network operators when penetration levels are approaching 20% and higher. The fluctuating nature of these renewable generating resources, nondispatchability, daily and seasonal generation variations require additional measures to continue to grow the renewable penetration levels.
