Abstract :
The world´s ageing population and prevalence of chronic diseases have led to escalating healthcare costs and heavy social-economical burden. In response to this, many parties have proposed personalized telehealth and wearable health monitoring systems as cost-effective solutions for geriatric and chronic care. The conventionally monitored physiologic signals include electrocardiogram (ECG), photoplethysmogram (PPG), blood pressure (BP), body temperature and movement. However, alternative measurement approaches are also being sought for better accessibility and understanding of the patients´ health. This paper gives an overview of pupillary dynamics and their diagnostic values, and proposes an eye-based mobile health (m-health) system. Preliminary results show that pupillary movements contain important physiological information. Long-term eye monitoring can be realized with a low-cost camera-mounted eyewear system.
