Abstract
EU research project TAUPE has shown positive results for the use of PLC as an avionics data bus. Performance testing on a laboratory demonstrator has shown PLC can provide data rates approaching 100 Mbps and low latency times (<;5 ms). However, deficiencies have been identified mainly at the MAC layer related to: Network setup time; Efficient support of multicast/broadcast data delivery; and Deterministic channel access scheduling. These deficiencies are not inherent to PLC, but rather to specific implementations of consumer technology, do not present a showstopper. Future work will focus on moving more towards safety critical applications by: Developing a more deterministic PLC MAC protocol; and Developing an FPGA-based modem compliant to the relevant Design Assurance Guidelines.
