Abstract :
Gridding Urban Management (GUM) seems to be a promising model for urban management in the 21st century. But GUM must be more than “infrastructure” - it needs to support effective management strategies. This paper outlines our initial attempt of examining urban problems within a GUM framework, and using an agent-based system to study strategy choices. We have developed a prototype system and modeled some management strategies for Shanghai GUM. The preliminary results demonstrate our system can help decision makers understand a multitude of local interactions in cities, explore strategies without always designing field experiments, and improve community wellbeing.
