  • Abstract
In the EUTELSAT Hot Bird 4 launched in Spring 1998, EUTELSAT has incorporated a new payload element called Skyplex, which facilitates the broadcasting of digital multiprogramme television and multimedia services in general. The key feature of the SKyPLEX concept is to offer a means of uplinking different programmes and/or data services independently from the distributed geographical sites, while maintaining a single multiplexed downlink signal transmitted by the satellite. The Skyplex system is the first intelligent satellite system with MPEG-2 on-board processing capabilities to be operational on a worldwide basis. By marrying the satellite DVB/MPEG2 technology with IP based protocols and applications EUTELSAT has been actively opening a new market for satellite multimedia services. These services, thanks to the flexibility and affordability of DVB and IP hardware and software technology will be instrumental in enlarging the satellite presence in the field of non-entertainment multimedia services
