Abstract
ATM offers two major benefits to telecom operators. The first is that a single network can carry many different traffic types, with various grades of service, multiplexed together. The second is that end-to-end managed services over a managed network can be provided using a combination of in-channel and overlay techniques. Dynamic ATM networking as opposed to static, implies the use and management of soft and switched virtual paths and circuits as opposed to permanent virtual paths and circuits. This paper describes work done at BT Laboratories on ATM signalling and SVCs over satellite and progress made on network management in the satellite environment
