Abstract
Energy consumption plays an important role in the cost of manufacturing systems. In this paper, we will focus on a class of production lines motivated by vehicle assembly. Although there are some studies on the energy consumption models for some of the individual manufacturing processes or environmental condition maintaining systems, the energy consumption models of the whole production system seem lacking. To explore energy saving opportunities in the design and operation stages of the system, we aim at building a system level energy consumption estimation model with key parameters such as machine capacities and production activities included. We will start from review existing work and basic energy calculation formulas, and then present some progresses made toward a system level energy consumption model.
