  • Abstract
The authors demonstrate that ferroelectric polymers can be applied to erasable optical memories. The media developed consists of a 1-μm-thick layer of a dye-doped vinylidene fluoride/trifluoroethylene copolymer spin-coated onto an indium-tin-oxide (ITO)-coated glass plate. Information is written in terms of sequences of positive and negative polarizations, which are generated by irradiating a focused laser beam 5 μm in diameter with the aid of a sign-controlled electric field. The data are read out pyroelectrically by scanning the laser beam
