Abstract
ATC (Azienda Trasporti Consorziali), the public transport operating company in Bologna, manages both the urban and the extra-urban bus network with about 900 vehicles. ATC is implementing a global project dedicated to the urban mobility through new systems application and integration, in order to improve life quality in the city of Bologna. The Bologna AVM system will be able to collect and to compute the relevant data related to the service and the public transport operational network. The main aims of the system include: 1) improvement of the service managerial duality by means of real time control; 2) improvement of service planning; and 3) improvement of the service information to the drivers and to the users. The project foresees the installation of radio devices on the vehicles for the service data transmission and voice communications with the operating centre; this will be made in order to provide the driver direct support and assistance. The global framework shows four subsystems: a ground system, an on-board system, a communication system, and a location system
