  • Abstract
In the region around Amsterdam, the policy of the government is to reduce traffic and to optimise the traffic systems in such a way that the infrastructure is used near the optimum. With the plans for the near future the Amsterdam region will get new systems that will operate automatically and in coordination with each other. The systems include: the motorway control and signalling system (MCSS), ramp metering on the slip roads of the motorways, main line metering, variable message signs, lanes for particular users only, and incident management. Some of them are almost completed, others are in the pilot phase and some are in the planning. The existing traffic control systems of the tunnels are integrated parts of the MCSS
