Abstract
A high number of accidents in the European countries happen at intersections. This paper describes a system architecture with its environmental models and the single functions for a traffic unit control ACTROS family developed by the company SWARCO within the EU-project INTERSAFE-2. It details the different functional modules with focus on the Peripheral Component Interconnect Express (PCIe), which has been adopted as a general purpose IO device interconnect in automotive applications. Its features lead to a significant increase of safety at intersections based on state of the art sensors and vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2I) real time communication.
