Abstract :
Underground metal oxide surge arresters are being used in increasing numbers to protect underground distribution cable and equipment. Laboratory failure mode tests and field experience have shown that current UD surge arrester designs fail in a manner which may not provide adequate safety for nearby operating personnel. The mode of failure of these arresters is described, and a design that limits the outcome of violent failures through controlled energy release is proposed
