Abstract
The modified Allan variance is defined, and its function is described on the basis of detailed mathematical derivation and demonstration. Analytical formulae are given for the modified Allan variance corresponding to commonly used models, making it possible to easily distinguish between white phase noise and flicker phase noise. The experimental setup and the main measuring program are described.<>
