Abstract :
Performance evaluations were carried out for constant-velocity flow, segmented-electrode linear magnetoplasmadynamic generator ducts of various designs, yielding the same output power, using as working fluids cesium-seeded He, Ne, Ar, Li, Hg, or Tl. The cesium seed ratio was selected to yield the maximum output power density for each case. Two operative conditions were studied: (1) the inlet static pressure had the same value for all cases; or (2) the inlet duct area was the same for all cases. The evaluations show that the cesium-seeded noble gases lead to better design and performance of the MPD generator ducts than the cesium-seeded condensable vapors (Li, Hg, and Tl), with the most compact design and optimum performance parameters being obtained with He
